Bombay Jayashri, Malladi Brothers and Gundecha Brothers at Gayana Samaja

Last month, Bangalore Gayana Samaja at Chamarajapet gave ample opportunities for the classical music lovers to swim in the sea of music of the highest caliber  and I managed to attend a couple of concerts, both of which I had waited for a long time. One by Bombay Jayashri and the other, a Jugalbandi by the famous Carnatic duo Malladi Brothers and the Dhrupad maestros Gundecha Brothers.

Jayashri was at her sublime best, incidentally singing some of my favorite ragas, choosing Raga Kambhoji for the elaborate Ragalapana and a beautiful number in Desh for Tanam. Otherwise, the concert included renditions of Begade and Shivaranjani, and a heavenly singing of "Ragi Tandira" composition of Saint Purandara Dasa in Raga Revati. The violin accompaniment of Embar Kannan made the concert all the more special.

A couple of weeks later, it was the turn of the brothers Malladi and Gundecha - Malladi Sreeramprasad and Malladi Ravikumar; and Umakant Gundecha an Ramakant Gundecha - to weave their magic through some stunning Jugalbandi action. Starting off with Raga Shree, they moved on to the combinations of Chakravaka - Ahir Bhairav, Hamsanandi - Malwa, Hindola - Malkauns, before a great little piece in Shivaranjani and a grand and heavenly Ragam Tanam Pallavi in Charukeshi, in praise of "Sangeeta Pitamaha" Purandara Dasa. Akhilesh Gundecha on Pakhwaj, Sundaresan on violin and Neyveli Narayanan on Mridanga were equally up to the task to make the concert a memorable one.
